Discursive essay

This essay will examine the current issues in the teaching of grammar. The essay will examine two questions, firstly, should we teach grammar, or should we simply create the conditions by which learners learn naturally? Secondly, it will examine if grammar should be taught in separate lessons or if grammar should be integrated into communicative activities.

The first part of grammar teaching is to teach the students the grammar rules, due to this the students become aware of the grammatical rules. The may not fully understand the grammar rules, after a certain topic of grammar is taught, that is why it is beneficial for the learners to put these new learnt grammatical topics into practice, for example, by doing a speaking exercise.

There are three broad forms when it comes to form-focused instruction. In my opinion incidental focus on form is the most effective one and the most beneficial for language learning. In this form the attention is on the context of a communicative activity. During this approach the attention is on a wide variety of grammatical structures during one task. In this approach the grammar is integrated into a curriculum consisting of communicative tasks.

All things considered, I come to the conclusion, that communicative tasks are beneficial for grammar teaching and the learning experience of your pupils. By putting the new learned grammar into practice, the students are more likely to learn. In this task you put focus and attention on the context. As a teacher this gives you a great opportunity to let the students practice a wide variety of grammatical structures during one activity.
